Purpose Driven Boards Make a Difference

Community Action staff and board members from across Ohio came together to learn how to create a Purpose Driven Board.

Board Source’s Dani Robbins presented the approach to board recruitment and creation at a free statewide training event on Feb. 20. Robbins encouraged attendees to examine their boards and make sure they reflect the communities they serve.

“We don’t want just one type of person on our board,” she said. “We want to tap the entire intellectual capital of everyone available to get the right solutions.”

Robbins said the shift to purpose driven boards includes putting the purpose of the organization before the organization itself while also respecting the ecosystem in which the board operates. Many organizations in a community may have a shared sense of purpose: what is the social change they are seeking?

This focus, she added, includes centering the board’s role in strategy and direction setting. Boards need to make sure the way they spend their time at meetings reflects the organization’s true purpose and priorities.

Part 2 of OUCAN’s free Statewide Day of Training Series will be held virtually on April 11 and discuss Organizational Structure. Part 3 will cover the Results Oriented Management and Accountability (ROMA) system on Sept. 12. Save the dates and watch for announcements about registration.
